A Rare Case of Aggressive Melanotic Schwannoma Occurred in Spinal Nerve of a 59-Year-Old Male

Melanotic schwannoma (MS) is a rare variant of nerve sheath neoplasm that shows ultrastructural and immunophenotypical features of Schwann cells but also has cytoplasmic melanosomes and is reactive for melanocytic markers as well. Unlike conventional schwannoma, which is totally benign, MS has an unpredictable prognosis and is thought to have low-malignant potential. Herein, we present a rare c...

Melanotic schwannoma of thoracic spinal root mimics metastatic melanoma: a potential pitfall for misdiagnosis.

Melanotic Schwannoma (MS) is a kind of rare subtypes of Schwannoma. In this tumor, amounts of melanin always mislead inexperienced pathologists to a diagnosis of primary or metastastic melanoma. Different from the ordinary Schwannoma, MS is considered as a low malignant nerve sheave tumor. Here we present a case of MS arising from the thoracic spinal and initially was misdiagnosed as metastasti...

Canine malignant melanotic schwannomas: a light and electron microscopic study of two cases.

Malignant, melanotic schwannoma of the spinal cord was diagnosed in two two-year-old dogs. The neoplastic spindle cells were arranged in a herringbone or storiform pattern; the intracytoplasmic melanin varied in amount in different areas of the two neoplasms. Ultrastructural features including cytoplasmic lamellar premelanosomes and melanosomes, rudimentary cell junctions, scattered pinocytotic...

Malignant melanotic schwannoma of the bronchus.

A case of malignant melanotic schwannoma arising in the right upper lobe bronchus of a 27 year old man is presented. Tumours of this type most commonly occur in spinal nerve roots and are generally considered to be benign. The behaviour of those originating elsewhere is less predictable. As far as we are aware this is the first reported case affecting the respiratory tract.

Psammomatous Melanotic Schwannoma: A Challenging Histological Diagnosis

Psammomatous melanotic schwannoma (PMS) is a rare pigmented tumor that can be part of the Carney complex. Here, we describe the case of a 35-year-old female patient presenting an isolated subcutaneous PMS. Histopathological analysis could not formally exclude the malignant nature of the tumor. The challenging histological diagnosis and consequently the management of the patient are described.
